Pearls make amazing accessories and are perhaps the only pieces of jewelry that will always stay timeless and go with almost every piece of your wardrobe. If you are looking to buy a nice necklace or bracelet, then read these 4 tips to valuing pearls. Don't overpay for poor quality, get the maximum value for your money.

Grade:

Many gemstones, such as diamonds, have industry fixed standards that determine their quality. Not so with pearls, almost every company uses their own classification scale, so that can make it confusing to compare. However, most companies do use the simple 'A' and 'AA+' scale. Simply put, these describe pearls that are worth buying. An 'AA+' pearl is an exceptionally beautiful pearl with no or very small faults. The 'A' pearl is a pearl with no major flaws and absolutely worth buying. Any pearls with big blemishes or cracks should not be bought.

Shape:

Pearls are round, or are they? As they are grown and developed organically, pearls are very rarely completely round. In the cases that they actually are, they are also very valuable. It's very difficult to produce such a specimen, even under controlled, cultured growth. That is why these are so expensive. If you want to get a good deal, it can be worth going for a pearl that has a less round shape.

Luster:

Luster is the big thing to look for. Luster means the inner glow of the pearl. An item with high lustre will be shiny, almost mirror like in the surface, while a low luster one will be dull, chalky and white. This is one of the most important factors in buying pearls. Try to get as high luster as your money can buy.

Surface:

Last, we look at the surface of the pearl. You look for cracks, imperfections and blemishes. If the pearl has noticeable cracks, it should be cheap. A high quality piece will only have small faults and should only be observable under light and from a close distance.

When buying any kind of jewelry, it is always a good idea to have fixed the budget before buying. The sky is the limit with jewelry and you will find it much easier to set a limit and then look to get the maximum value for that.
